Kyle has always liked to swim... however, he has NEVER liked to put his head under water. So we continue swimming lessons so that each year he can improve and become more comfortable in the water.
The first day of swimming lessons he did great until it was time to dive. He faked a stomach ache and his instructor let him skip diving. On the way home we had quite a discussion and he told me he would go back the next day and give it his all.
Day two: It's time to dive and I see he's so nervous... They sit at the edge of the pool and do a seated dive. Flop, in the water he goes. Ok. Made it. Next it's time to kneel and dive. Nervous again. A little bigger flop but he's made it. Now - the standing dive. I can see the fear in his eyes and as his mother I want to go do it for him. Kyle puts his feet in the stance, raises his arms beside his ears, points his hands up and toward the water. His body moves towards the water and at the last minute he goes in feet first! He comes up and out of the water and he's so proud of himself! He did it! Well maybe not... but he did go in and come back up! Yeah!
By the end of the second week he was doing cannon balls off the diving board one right after another. We still have to repeat level four, I guess technique matters :)
I am really proud of the progress Kyle made in lessons this year. He's not afraid to go under and doesn't even hesitate to go off the diving board. Great job Kyle!
